In 1945, an active group of watercolorists within the Detroit-based Scarab Club met throughout the course of that year to discuss the feasibility of forming a local watercolor organization.

During 1945, the group researched and developed the theme, constitution and mission of the society which was based on the premise of integrity and professionalism. The Michigan Water Color Society was voted into existence in 1946 by the founding members. The original founding members consisted of: Mary Jane Anway, Mary Jane Bigler, William Bostick, Donald Brackett, Thad Brykalski, Wayne Claxton, Donald Gooch, Ernest Scanes, Emil Weddige and Nelson Welch.

The mission of the Michigan Water Color Society is to promote a stronger awareness and interest in watercolor; to maintain high standards; and to further education in the contemporary arts.
